CLIL - SCIENCE

The Respiratory System

Tutor: Roberta Carnevale (English teacher)

The main idea of CLIL is that of learning a content subject in a language which is different from your mother tongue. We have started with science and specifically with the respiratory system!

Using Edmodo, our English teacher gave us lots of material to study at home: websites, videos, online exercises and quizzes, pictures etc. She also posted some tutorials on how to select and use material and how to make presentations using PowerPoint, OpenOffice and Prezi.

We gradually learned the English names of the parts of the respiratory system and we discovered how to describe the way it works when we breathe in and out.

Then in class we worked in groups to create short presentations about  the respiratory system. Three groups decided to create presentations using Prezi; one group decided to draw posters of the respiratory system to present to the class, and one group decided to create a model of the lungs to show how the diaphragm and the lungs function during respiration.

It was not easy and we had lots of trouble learning the English terms and (above all) their pronunciation, but we made it!

Special thanks to:

Our Science and Maths Teacher, Rosa Battiloro, who got us to create models of lungs in class and gave our English teacher the idea of organizing a CLIL on the respiratory system.

Classes I F, I D and III F (and their teachers) who often changed rooms with us  so that we could make use of internet connection to work with tablets and laptops as well as the IWB to show our presentations.

Benedetta, for her patience towards us and our teacher!

Last but not least, our Headmaster, Gianna Celli, who agreed to publish  this website!
