Aboriginal dot painting
Aboriginal people did not have a written language. They used art as an alternate method of writing down stories of cultural importance.
For them Artwork was very important because it was almost like their own language. Aborigines used icons (symbols) to tell stories through generations. They told stories in words and pictures mainly about how the world began. They called this the Dreamtime.
So, their special type of art, which was made up of “dots”, had several purposes :
-
to tell stories
-
express feelings
-
record history
-
recount Dreaming (creation) stories
-
pass on knowledge
-
teach morals
