Aboriginal culture
The term Aborigines refers to the native people of Australia. The Aborigines are thought to have migrated from Asia about 60,000 years ago. They are one of the oldest groups of humans on the planet. Before the settlement of Australia by the Europeans, the Aborigines were hunters and lived semi-nomadic lives.
They used throwing weapons, such as spears and boomerangs, to hunt prey and they gathered wild plants as food. Each clan had its own territory; these communities lived along the coast or rivers and were also expert fishermen. Their territories or “traditional lands “ were defined by geographic boundaries such as rivers, lakes and mountains.
Today there are about 400,000 aboriginal people in Australia, about 2% of the population. There are about 500/600 distinct groups.
